Thanks for taking a few minutes to learn what The Flyer newsmagazine is and why it’s important for us to seek sponsorships from the community.

The Flyer is Fairmont High School’s online newsmagazine.  Students who are on The Flyer staff are in the newsmagazine class at Fairmont, but the class operates very much like a regular news organization.  The newsmagazine, located at, is run by the students and advised by Lacy Drake, a Fairmont English and Journalism teacher who was on The Flyer staff when she was a student at Fairmont.

The mission of The Flyer is to inform and entertain the Fairmont and Kettering communities and to provide a voice for the student body.  We do this while encouraging staff members to polish their communication and organization skills as they produce a journalistically sound website.  In doing so, students learn more about journalistic writing, photography, press law and ethics.  They must follow current events and trends and learn how to write about those events and trends in a way that will interest teen readers.  They also must learn how to manage their time and how to work as part of a team under deadline pressure.

The Flyer was an award-winning print magazine for many years, but in the face of rising costs and a slow economy, we took the plunge online in the summer of 2009 and discontinued our print issues.  It was a scary move, but one that we think has worked out well.  Instead of selling 600-700 forty-page magazines each month, The Flyer website attracted 2,000 – 2,500 visitors each week this past school year!  We are looking to build on those numbers and attract even more students, parents, grandparents, alumni and community members to the website each week.

By going almost entirely online, The Flyer has cut down on expenses considerably.  However, beyond providing computers, a classroom and a teacher one period a day, The Flyer does not receive school money to fund its operations.  And we do still have expenses to cover.  These include:

  • hosting and technical support fees for the website
  • software purchases and updates
  • digital cameras, voice recorders and other equipment
  • scholarships for key editors to attend the High School Journalism Institute at Indiana University
  • the induction banquet for the Quill & Scroll International Honor Society for High School Journalists
  • membership in the National Scholastic Press Association
  • contest entry fees
  • postage
  • staff T-shirts

Thank you for your consideration!
