After 13 years of heartbreak, the Firebirds upset their cross-town rival 13-12 in a game that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Alter kicker, Alden Simms, missed a 41-yard field goal with 1:29 left in the game as the home crowd erupted. The kick sailed right, giving the Firebirds possession to kneel twice, running the clock to 0.0 to seal the win.

Fairmont head coach, Dave Miller was able to ring in his second year with the Birds with a season defining win that was sure to inspire not only the football team but the community as well.

Fairmont Principal, Tyler Alexander couldn’t be more proud and excited about what this win means to Kettering as a whole.

“This win sets the tone for our school year, where we’re heading as a team, a building and a community,” Alexander said.

United Student Body president, Cayla Teeters believes this is an emotional time for everyone involved.

“After all of the tough losses, this is a great moment for our school and community,” Teeters said.

The emotions were evident when walking the halls at Fairmont the day after the victory.

“It has just been a great day,” Alexander said. “It is neat to be able to be in school after such a big win.”

The Birds first “Thursday Night Lights” debut proved to be a success, making headlines and news broadcasts all over the Miami Valley.

Junior wide receiver, Ryan Hall called the moment “surreal” and talked about what it means to be a part of this win.

“We represent Kettering, ” Hall said. “It was an awesome experience.”

The Birds kept the Knights out of the end-zone in the 2nd half. Senior Kennon Burroughs scored the winning touchdown for Fairmont on an 8-yard rush at the end of the 3rd quarter.

“It wasn’t flashy.  It was a get-after-it kind of win for us,” said Jeff Renshaw, South unit principal at Fairmont.

The Birds are back in action next Friday v. Hamilton. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
