Fairmont’s October Athlete of the Month, Jake Perkins, has put in an immense amount of work and has watched it pay off this season.
As a freshman, Jake was set to start at running back for the varsity football team. As the first game of the 2014 season arrived, a torn ACL during practice landed him in the hospital and off of the field. Now as a sophomore, Perkins is back on the field as the Firebird’s starting running back.
His love for the game is evident. Perkins’ talents on the field have been in the works for many years. He reflected back on all of the seasons he has suited up in his pads.
“I’ve been playing the sport since I was in kindergarten, about five years old,” Perkins said.
More than just his own hard work and dedication, Perkins knows that his success can be attributed to all of his supporters and fans. He said that he owes a lot to his parents and his friends.
“Everyday my friends and family push me to get better,” he said.
Perkins believes his accomplishments on the field have made him a better person. Playing football is one of his top priorities. He stays focused on the game and continues to strive for greatness in all aspects of his life.
As the 2015 season ended for the Firebirds, Perkins ranked 26th in rushing yards in the Greater Western Ohio Conference totaling 440 yards for the season with an average of 5.4 per carry and 44 per game.
Perkins also tallied 13 receptions on the season for 244 receiving yards.
Perkins has dreams of going pro someday. His positive attitude toward the game and his love for the Friday night lights is contagious. It seems as though Perkins has found his calling in the game of football at Fairmont.
“I chose this sport because I like contact and I am competitive. I like going against people and mainly it’s a good way to get a new family,” he said.
