Adviser Janie Ross recently announced the The Flyer editorial selections for the 2014-15 school year. Returning as Editor-in-Chief is junior Sam Barton, and returning as Chief Photographer is junior Lily Condron. Sophomore Jake Shook, this year’s Sports Editor, will be joining Sam as Editor-in-Chief, taking over for graduating senior Brad Steel.
Ross offered some insight as to why she believes Jake was the best choice to take Brad’s position.
“When I had Jake in Journalism when he was a freshman, I recognized that he was a young man with a passion for journalism,” she said. “He stepped up on his first year of staff, and he proved he knows how to lead and work under pressure. Jake and Sam will make a great team next year.”
While all staffers work hard and put time and energy into their assignments, a large portion of the success The Flyer has experienced throughout the 2013-14 school year is because of the student leaders overseeing it. Ross discussed how Sam Barton’s leadership has contributed to The Flyer.
“Sam has been a wonderful addition to staff,” Ross said. “He got hooked on it early, as a sophomore, and stepped up his leadership as editor this year. His experience will be invaluable next year.”
Ross also discussed how Lily Condron’s persona as Chief Photographer has brought a new element to the staff. “Everyone who knows Lily knows she’s bright and sweet, and I’ve learned about her great sense of humor this year,” Ross said. “She has a growing passion for photography and I know she’ll do big things next year.”
The Flyer adviser said senior Editor-in-Chief Brad Steel will certainly be missed. “Nobody can replace Brad,” Ross said. “I think of all my editors as special and there are no cookie cutter replacements. We’ll miss Brad’s big, friendly personality and humor.”
