Members of the Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Bowling teams warm up before a match against Centerville High School this year.

It was really no surprise that the 2013-14 Fairmont bowling teams made it all the way to the State tournament this year. It’s become a habit for the Firebirds, as they have qualified for State 92 percent of the time since the inception of the tournament in 2001.

This year, the Boys’ Varsity Bowling team finished 7th in the State, while the Girls’ Varsity Bowling team came in 12th. While the teams didn’t finish as well as they would have liked, the bowlers earned a number of accolades and team members were proud of their accomplishments.

Head Coach Rex Wolfe would have been the most surprised person if the Firebirds hadn’t bowled their way to the State tournament. “Kettering Fairmont is a powerhouse in the bowling world,” said Wolfe, adding that it’s always among the top 16 teams in the entire state.

Boys’ Varsity Bowling

Fairmont’s Boys’ Varsity Bowling team took first place at the Division I District tournament, allowing them to qualify for the State tournament. “The boys have been to the top 16 State Championships every year except one since the OHSAA started having State Championships,” Wolfe said.

Wolfe said the team has three main goals at the beginning of each season. “The main three goals are to have fun, to learn to be a better bowler and to make it to State Championships,” he said. It appears the boys achieved all three goals.

The Boys’ Varsity team had much success in their season this year, and senior Austin Paulick is happy with how the season went.

“We had a rocky start, but finished well and that’s what matters,” Paulick said.

The boys’ team won six matches this year before the District tournament. During one of the matches, sophomore Paul Lyons bowled a perfect 300 game against Springfield, the only bowler for Fairmont this year to bowl a perfect game this year.

The team achievements were: Pre-GWOC Tournament: 13th; Post-GWOC Tournament: 8th; OHSAA Kick-Off Tournament: 5th; Team USA Tournament: 6th; Baker Bash Tournament: 5th; OHSAA Sectional Tournament: 3rd; OHSAA District Tournament: 1st; and OHSAA State Championship: 7th.

The boys’ individual awards earned included: GWOC All-Conference: Austin Mahaffey; All Division 1st Team: Austin Mahaffey; GWOC Special Mention: Austin Paulick; OHSAA Kickoff All Tournament Team: Hunter Schlegel; OHSAA District Championships All Tournament Team: Paul Lyons; All Ohio 2nd Team: Austin Mahaffey; and All Ohio Honorable Mention: Paul Lyons.

The special team awards were: Most Improved: Joe Roudebush; Sportsmanship: Trevor Luthman; Coaches Award: Paul Lyons; and Most Valuable: Austin Mahaffey.

As Paulick wrapped up his senior year in bowling, he offered some advice to upcoming bowlers. “Never think you’re not good enough,” he said. “Stay up and don’t get mad when things don’t go your way.”

Girls’ Varsity Bowling

The Girls’ Varsity Bowling team has had a busy season, too, coming in 3rd at the District Tournament and qualifying for State. Although they didn’t make it to finals, the girls still finished 12th out of 170 teams in Ohio.

The Girls’ Varsity Bowling team had some trouble at the start, but worked through it and ended strong.

“I feel that the season went great, and the team did really well,” said senior Taylor Wright. “The team showed a lot of bonding, which helped us throughout the season.”

The Girls’ team won eight of 12 matches this year, with their highest score being 2339 against Beavercreek. In tournaments, the team finishes were: Pre-GWOC Tournament: 3rd; Post-GWOC Tournament: 1st; OHSAA Kickoff Tournament: 8th; Team USA Tournament: 1st Champions; OSU Buckeye Classic Tournament: 8th; Baker Bash Tournament: 6th; OHSAA Sectional Tournament: 2nd; OHSAA District Tournament: 3rd; and OHSAA State Championship: 12th.

The girls’ individual awards included: All GWOC Conference: Jessica Wolfe; All GWOC Division 1st Team: Sarah Conard and Jessica Wolfe; All GWOC Division 2nd Team: Alyssa Oster; GWOC Special Mention: Taylor Wright; Pre-GWOC Tournament Team: Jessica Wolfe; Ohio State Buckeye Classic All Tournament Team: Alyssa Oster; and OHSAA District Championships All Tournament Team: Jessica Wolfe.
