The Fairmont Swim and Dive team gathers to send their Varsity qualifiers to the State meet on Feb. 28, 2014.

The Firebird Swim and Dive team wrapped up its season with impressive results at the District and State meets.

Many of the swimmers achieved season best times at the District meet on Feb. 14, 2014, at The Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center at  Miami University. The 400-meter relay team, consisting of senior Kristian Berning and juniors Ethan Hosford, Matthew Gearing, and Joe Warner, qualified for State. Berning also qualified for State in the 50-meter freestyle, placing 2nd, and in the 200-meter freestyle, placing 5th.

Other notable performances from the District meet included the boys’ 200-meter freestyle relay team, which managed a 5th place finish with a time of 1:29.56. This relay team consisted of Berning, Hosford, Warner and junior Seth Coleman. Freshman Nick Aukerman came home with a 17th place finish at Districts in the 500-meter freestyle, with a time of 4:43.96.

The girls’ side sent the 200-meter freestyle relay team of freshman Marie Docken, seniors Paige Jordan and Bailey Kunst, and junior Allie Long to Districts. The team finished with a time of 1:44.67, a season best. Docken also competed in the 200-meter individual medley, and she nearly qualified for State, dropping 4 seconds from her previous qualifying time.

The diving team also performed impressively at Districts. The diving Districts were held on Feb. 10-11, and three Fairmont divers were invited to compete. Freshman Lily Knopp placed 21st for the girls’ team. Freshman Zach Kendig placed 19th and sophomore Dustin Hayes ended up with an 8th place finish. Hayes was incredibly close to the seventh-place finish required for a spot at State. Only 2 points separated him from a spot at the State meet.

At the State meet in Canton, Ohio, the boys’ 400-meter relay team ended up with a 23rd place finish. Berning swam the 50-meter freestyle in an impressive time of 21.78 seconds, a performance that placed him 20th overall in Ohio. Berning finished 24th in the 200-meter freestyle.

Head Coach Dan Toberman said he couldn’t be more proud of how the Firebird swimmers performed this season. “This season went well for the Firebirds,” he said. “Things are looking great for next season, with incredible gains in the underclassmen swimmers.”
