Applications for the Melissa Fortener McLaughlin Scholarship are now being accepted. The scholarship offers $1,000 to a graduating Fairmont senior, and the money can be used for tuition, room and board, and other related education expenses at an accredited college, university or trade school.
have a minimum of a 2.5 grade-point average;
include a copy of the SAR (Student Aid Report) summary page from the FAFSA;
include a recent letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, coach, community or church leader; and
include an essay answering the question: “How would you best describe your contribution to Fairmont High School and to your community?”
The scholarship, sponsored by the Kettering Dreambuilders, is named after Melissa Fortener McLaughlin (pictured here), who graduated from Fairmont High School in 1996 and lost a five-year battle with cancer in January 2009, just two days before her 31st birthday.
Last year’s recipient was Kelly Hart, now a freshman at Bowling Green State University.
