Fairmont Industries will host its Annual Plant Sale May 2-6 in front of Fairmont High School. However, the students are also taking orders for a diverse array of items, including flowers, herbs, hanging baskets, vegetables and planters created by Fairmont Industries students. Preorder forms are available in the high school’s Main Office, but those who enjoy handpicking their flowers may want to come to the actual sale. Hours for the sale are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
The plant sale provides funding for the many activities and events the Fairmont Industries offers. Fairmont Industries helps prepare disabled students by teaching them life and job skills. “The students enjoy helping at the flower sale. They plant seeds in the greenhouse and use cuttings of the other flowers and plants,” said Fairmont Industries adviser Kelly Iraci.
The students themselves are given preorder forms to encourage family and friends to buy flowers, and a group of students goes to Stocksleger’s greenhouses to hand pick all of the flowers for the presale orders and the annual plant sale. The students help care for and make sure the flowers and plants are healthy, so they are in good condition when the plant sale happens.
“The students are responsible for greeting customers and offering a helping hand while customers are shopping or helping customers carry plants to their car,” Iraci said.
The money raised from the sale helps with the fees that educational opportunities cost. Because of the money, each year students get to go to camp, where they get to go horseback riding, participate in team-building activities, learn about animals and outdoor cooking, and go canoeing.
“The students learn so much about gardening, it is truly a great experience,” Iraci said. “They have fun and gain valuable experience in sales and customer service.”
