Fairmont High School and the Kettering community raised $83,915.33 in the Spirit Chain competition with Centerville High School last week. Centerville’s total was $45,000. The results of the contest, which benefits a variety of charities, was announced before the football game between the two schools on Oct. 1, 2010.
Each school selects its own charities to support. This year, Fairmont’s theme was “Kettering Cares about Kids,” and the groups it selected were the Kettering Backpack Program, A Kid Again and the Treatment Away Fund through Dayton Children’s Hospital.
The Kettering Backpack Program distributes food such as ravioli, pudding, fruit, cereal, and macaroni & cheese into the backpacks of Kettering students on free or reduced lunch on Friday afternoons. The program serves more than 350 children.
A Kid Again provides activities and outings for children with medical problems and their families, and the Treatment Away Fund provides funds to help families who have a child battling cancer.
