Firebird Athlete Spotlight: Austin Hedges

Head wrestling coach Frank Baxter is no stranger to success … On and off of the mat. Being at the helm of the wrestling program for 23 years, he has coached countless student-athletes who earn their successes in the gym and the classroom.

Senior Austin Hedges is a four-year wrestler for Baxter and the Firebirds. This season, he was a district qualifier and team captain.

“He is a good kid, ” Baxter said. “And he works hard every single day.”

Hedges earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors for the 2021 season. He finished the season 19-11 with 14 pins as 195 weight.

“He was GWOC runner-up and finished third as sectionals,” Baxter said.

In a year of virtual learning and much uncertainly, Hedges has taken care of business in the classroom as well, passing all of his classes and staying focused on academics.

As his high school tenure wraps up, Hedges prepares for his future as a U.S. Marine.
