Contrary to previous news, the public hearing concerning the termination of the contract of Fairmont High School English teacher Mike Togliatti will not be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

FHS Principal Dan VonHandorf said neither a hearing date nor a neutral third-party arbitrator has been designated. The board of education must have a disinterested mediator to help negotiate terms of the board of education’s decision. Until both the board of education and Togliatti select someone as such, the negotiation cannot proceed. VonHandorf said it could be months before the parties set a date for the hearing, which must be public if Togliatti requests it to be so.

Repeated attempts to contact Human Resources Director Jim Justice — who directed the investigation while it was in the Kettering School District’s hands — were unsuccessful.

After a student complained about Togliatti’s classroom behavior last spring, administrators began calling in other students and compiling statements. On April 18, the district removed Togliatti from the classroom and placed him on administrative leave.

I have never had Tog as a teacher but most of my friends have, and it’s such a shame that someone like him would be ripped away from his job at a great school just because of a few students complaining about something that wasn’t even true. Sure, teachers will cuss – accidental and purposely – they’re human, too. If he gets his job taken away because of that, then every student at Fairmont should be suspended or expelled because we all cuss at each other and we all say harsh things sometimes. I don’t want to say any names, but I hope that those students who put Tog in this position feel ashamed of what they did.

I sure do hope that a miracle happens and that Tog gets to come back. None of this is fair. He has a family to support, meaning he needs to be bringing in money.

I had Tog for my sophomore and junior year as an English teacher. I am a senior this year, and I can admit I am extremely disappointed I could not have him again. His class was spectacular and he was one of the best teachers I have ever had, for any subject. I really hope they don’t terminate Mr. Togliatti, I think it would be great for other students to experience the same learning that I did from him. I learned a lot from him and his class, and he made the material interesting.
