Fairmont High School’s annual food drive collected over 4,000 canned goods and pantry items for the 2011 school year. In addition, 181 familes received Christmas baskets. Every year, each unit competes to see who can collect the most canned food items through the units’ advisories. The amount each advisory collects is then added up and calculated into points for each unit. This year, East Unit was the winner with 129 points, followed by Central Unit with 105 points, South Unit with 77 points and West Unit with 67 points. In addition to the units competing, each advisory competes to see who can bring in and donate the most canned food. The top advisories are either considered Gold, Silver or Bronze. This year there were 42 Gold Advisories, 11 Silver Advisories and 24 Bronze Advisories.

East Unit’s victory meant Hank Jackoby dressed up as a chicken for the day and was also featured on Good Morning Fairmont doing the chicken dance with participating class council members. In an effort to bring in more donations, each Unit Principal promised to dress as a character for a day if their unit won. East Unit Principal Hank Jackoby would have been a chicken, Central Unit Principal Andrew White would have dressed as Buddy the Elf, West Unit Principal Mike Nienaber would have dressed up as a prom queen and South Unit Principal Tyler Alexander would have dressed up as a baby.
