Junior Kevin O’Donnell captured first place in Fairmont High School’s Poetry Out Loud contest on Feb. 9, 2011. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest, and contestants had to memorize and recite two poems.
“The contestants did a great job memorizing their poems,” said English teacher Darren McGarvey, who organized the local contest. O’Donnell will now advance to the state competition in Columbus on March 12. The big prize comes if he can win at the national level: a $20,000 scholarship.
“It’s an honor to represent Fairmont at state for Poetry Out Loud,” said O’Donnell. The poems O’Donnell recited were “The Death of Allegory” by Billy Collins and “Under the Vulture Tree” by David Bottoms.
The second-place winner was senior Patrick Taylor, and the third-place winner was junior Kati Molnar.
Five students participated this year. “I’d like to see more performers in the future,” said McGarvey.
