When I saw Inglorious Basterds, I didn’t think Quentin Tarantino would be able to top it. Basterds, along with his scores of other acclaimed films (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs) are next-to-perfect in my opinion.

But when I walked out of the Rave Cinemas after seeing his most recent movie, Django Unchained, I was impressed once again. The film features a humorous and riveting script and stars many high-profile actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz.

Each actor delivers a thrilling performance, but I was completely taken aback by Foxx. His raw, real performance as Django, an African-American slave three years prior to the Civil War, is extremely powerful. Foxx doesn’t fail to deliver as he reveals the personality of a man who is treated as an animal. We see the brutality with which slaves were treated.

Foxx’s character, along with his partner Dr. King Schultz, played by Academy Award winner Waltz, create a dynamic duo I couldn’t help but love. The story never failed to intrigue me either, despite being a pretty lengthy film at 165 minutes.

But the most engaging performance in the film comes from DiCaprio, who plays eccentric plantation owner Calvin Candie. DiCaprio is animated, cruel, hilarious, and loving – all in one character. His diversity as an actor truly shines through in such a difficult role to play. His powerful performance in Django Unchained made it difficult to recall that this was the same actor who played the loyal and loving Jack Dawson in Titanic.

I would highly suggest going to see this movie, as it was not only my favorite movie of the year, but nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards. Overall, the film was another brilliant masterpiece by one of my favorite directors, Tarantino, and I truly hope it isn’t his last. It was a true embodiment of film-making genius, and I will definitely see it many more times.
