From Batman to Spider-Man, superhero movies have always been popular with the public. Fans love the idea of normal people putting on a mask and saving the world from those who would wish to harm it.

The plot of The Avengers is remarkably simple to follow. The Norse god of mischief, Loki, has made an alliance with an alien race that has a goal to take over the universe and destroy Earth as we know it in the process. The only people who are strong enough to prevent this catastrophe from happening are six super-powered misfits: Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye and Captain America.

What I find most enjoyable about The Avengers is how the recent Marvel movies seem to lead up to it. Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010) and Thor (2011) are all a part of what is the beginning of The Avengers movie franchise.

During the course of the film, we get to know the characters and watch how they interact with each other. I enjoy that because they were originally from different movies, so it’s cool having them in the same flick and watching their personalities mix and, at times, clash.

Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Bruce Banner (Hulk), both being science geniuses, hit it off right away and get along easily. They have many intellectual talks about their work, but also they talk about their struggles in life, how Banner has to deal with becoming Hulk and how Stark is constantly fighting to keep his artificial heart going.

However, Stark and Steve Rodgers (Captain America) don’t seem to get along that well. Rodgers (Captain America) sees Stark as not taking Earth’s situation seriously; therefore, they butt heads more than a few times throughout the film. In the end, Rodgers gains respect for Stark and they become acquaintances.

The highlight of the movie for me was when Loki unleashed his army on Manhattan. The Avengers all came together and took on thousands of aliens with foreign weapons. This was my favorite part because the Avengers finally got their act together and acted like a team.

I feel that Banner played a big part in the final battle that took place in Manhattan. My opinion is that Banner evened the odds during the battle and that if he hadn’t been there, the Avengers would surely have lost the war. He was the team’s “big gun.” He was able to take on the largest of the aliens, which greatly helped win the battle.

Banner isn’t the only superhero who has an important part in the film, though. Stark plays the role of the realist in the movie. He is constantly reminding the team that they are not soldiers and, aside from Rodgers, none has ever fought in a war.

You want to go see this movie. When The Avengers opened last spring, it broke box-office records as the largest weekend opening for a film and was the fastest film to gross $1 billion worldwide. That many movie-goers can’t be wrong, can they?
