When Will Ferrell comes out with a new movie, I always get super excited to see it. Typically, however, I wait until it hits the dollar theater, just because I’d rather not spend $12 on a two-hour movie. The only Ferrell movies that I didn’t wait to see were Land of the Lost, one of the most horrific, awful movies I think I’ve ever suffered through from Ferrell, and his most recent release, The Campaign.

I typically enjoy political satire; I understand it, and I think it’s quite comedic – this year especially, due to the presidential election coming up in November. Because it’s a political movie that starred both Ferrell and Zach Galifinakis, another of my favorite comedic actors, I didn’t want to wait until it hit the dollar theater to see it. I walked into the theater with high expectations, but I left with regret.

The movie is centered on a North Carolina congressional election between Cam Brady, played by Ferrell, and Marty Huggins, played by Galifinakis. Brady is a long-term Democratic congressman who ran unopposed until he committed a large political gaffe, in which he accidentally left a not-so-professional message on someone’s answering machine. Huggins was thrown in to be Brady’s Republican counterpart, and the race between them paralleled many of the same things that truly do happen during election season.

This movie was able to get laughs out of me, as with any bad comedy. However, it was not worth the $12. I had high expectations for it, which was in all honesty my first mistake of a Ferrell/Galifinakis combination movie.

There was so much that both actors could have done with the storyline to make it much, much more entertaining than it really was. With 2012 being an election year, they had many more opportunities to really draw people in and create a very humorous hit. But the acting was subpar for both actors and the plot line just wasn’t what I was expecting. It was funny, but it was not anything special.

Comparing it to other movies I’ve seen from both Ferrell and Galifinakis, like Step Brothers and The Hangover, I didn’t leave wanting to tell everyone how hilarious I thought it was.

Overall, I would say I was just barely satisfied with the performances from both Ferrell and Galifinakis. And now that I have wasted $24 on two of Ferrell’s worst movies ever, I can safely say that if he ever puts out another movie, I will be waiting until it’s in the dollar theater.
