It’s one thing to be a freshman on the Firebird Varsity Tennis team. It’s quite another accomplishment to be the No. 1 singles player on the team at the start of your freshman year.

The Firebird team welcomed Ian Steiner to the team this year, and he, the team and the coaches expect him to challenge many of the No. 1 players on area teams. “I believe he will make a big impact as one of our top varsity players,” said Head Coach Tim Voegeli.

Steiner answered some quick questions from The Flyer.

How long have you been playing tennis?

I’ve been playing for about four years.

What or who influenced you to start playing tennis?

Probably my dad. I had been playing basketball, and he saw that I was getting tired of losing with that team, so I decided to start with something that I’m actually good at.

How have you gotten to the point where you are now?

I’ve gotten to this point by playing and working out constantly the last year to be ready physically and mentally for my upcoming matches.

How is it being a freshman on varsity and getting along with the other varsity players?

It’s going well so far. It’s going to be hard not knowing all the people and everything, but I know it will get better throughout the season.

How do you think the team will do this year?

I think the team has the potential to win most of our matches and finish strong.

How do you feel you’ll do this year? What’s your goal?

I feel that I have the ability to do well this year. Being a freshman, it will be more difficult, but I believe I will prove to be a challenge for other No. 1 players. My goal for this year is to be at least .500 for the season, meaning that I win at least half of my matches.

What do you do before a match?

I run, stretch and warm up. I don’t usually do anything out of the ordinary.

What kind of racket do you use?

I use a Head YouTek.

What is your favorite thing about playing tennis?

I like all the different kinds of people I get to meet. And I like tennis because I’m just good at it.

Do you practice on your own?

Yes. I play with my own coach at KTC Quail and others four to five days a week.

What do you do in the off-season?

I play year-round, about four days a week. I also play in USTA (United States Tennis Association) tournaments.

What are your plans for college?

I want to try to get a tennis scholarship, but I don’t know if I’ll be good enough yet. But that’s my plan so far.
