Fairmont’s Varsity Football team went 2-8 again this season, but improved a lot from last year.

“This season I saw the team close the gap that was between us and other GWOC Central teams,” said Assistant Coach Stephen McDonald, who’s been with the team for three years. “The team showed up on Friday nights and put forth the effort that it takes to win football games. Even though our record didn’t reflect a winning season, I feel that the team had a winning record on the inside. And hopefully next year we can actually win the close games and be a contender in the GWOC Central.”

The Firebirds were led this year by junior quarterback Tom West. West completed 130 of 251 passes this year and passed for 1,802 yards. That’s an average of 14 yards a pass and 180 yards a game. West also rushed 82 times for 190 yards, an average of 2 yards a rush and 19 yards per game. West had 18 passing touchdowns this season; his longest was a 69-yard pass to senior wide receiver Ryan Belcher.

The Firebirds averaged 356 yards of offense a game, but their defense gave up an average of 397 yards a game.  Fairmont averaged 34 rushing 34 attempts per game for 161 yards, and for passing they averaged 23 attempts per game for 168 yards. The Firebirds averaged 5 penalties a game for 41 yards.

Several Firebirds were selected for the 1st Team All GWOC: senior offensive lineman Matt Silverman, senior linebacker Nick Bower, junior defensive back Robert Nsenga, and junior punter and return specialist Deven Gannon. Players who made 2nd Team All GWOC were: senior punter Nick Orr, senior defensive lineman Demetrius Summerville, senior wide receiver Brian Prouty, junior quarterback Tom West, junior defensive back Aaron Abbott, and sophomore running back Damon Bahns. Players who earned Special Mention were: senior kick-off return specialist Ryan Belcher and senior running back Chris Rhoades.

Team award winners were: MVP: Tom West; Coaches Award: senior offensive lineman Jordan Schlemmer; Sportsmanship Award: Bryan Prouty: and Most Improved: junior defensive back and wide receiver Aaron Abbott. The Michal Klenk Award went to senior linebacker Jacob Hesse.
