The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team is continuing to have a hugely successful season that they hope will end with a State Championship.

The Firebirds beat West Carrollton (67-15), Belmont (76-19) and Lebanon (48-32) to capture the Sectional Championship for the third consecutive year. The girls, now 22-1, will take on Cincinnati McAuley at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Harrison High School for the District Championships. If they win, they will advance to Regional semi-finals at Wright State.

Throughout this season, several Firebird basketball players have snatched up honors. Sophomore Chelsea Welch and freshmen Makayla Waterman and Kathyrn Westbeld were named First Team All-GWOC Central Division. Sophomore Alona Skipper was named Special Mention All-GWOC Central Division. The Firebird Girls’ Coach Tim Cogan, who has been selected as GWOC Central Coach of the Year three years times in his 11-year career at Fairmont, was named Coach of the Year again.
