For someone who’s trained in classical music, Alex Depue has rocking attitude … and the fiddle to match it. He plays violin, viola, mandolin, guitar, double bass, drums and piano, which makes it easy for him to play anything from rock to fiddle to classical.

Depue is bringing his versatile talent to Fairmont High School to perform with Fairmont High School Orchestra students. The concert is at 7 p.m. on March 15.

Depue played on the soundtrack and composed the music for the Philadelphia Orchestra documentary Music from the Inside Out. He records for NFL films and composes his own music.

Depue is also part of the Depue Brothers Band, which includes all of his violin-playing siblings, Wallace Jr. (concertmaster, Philadelphia Pops), Jason (first violin, Philadelphia Orchestra) and Zachary (concertmaster, Indianapolis Symphony).

In recent years, Depue teamed up with Mexican guitarist Miguel De Hoyos, and their album, Twisted Strings (2010) is available at www.thefiddlerllc.com

Depue started taking classical lessons when he was only 5 years old, and he won his first major competition when he was 10. At age 14, he won a competition that enabled him to perform at Carnegie Hall as concertmaster (first chair, first violin) for the National Guild Youth Symphony Orchestra. He continues to win competitions and appear as a guest soloist worldwide.

He picked up fiddle-playing at the age of 7. Among notable accomplishments are:

  • 1994-1998: Michigan State Fiddle Champion
  • 1999& 2005: First Place,Walnut Valley National Fiddle Champion
  • 2000: First Place, Hallettsville, Texas National Fiddle Champion
  • Ranked repeatedly among the Top 10 fiddlers at the Grand Masters Fiddle Championship (Nashville, Texas)

  • 2000-2006: Toured as Musical Director/Fiddler with Capitol Recording artist Chris Cagle
