As of late Friday afternoon, two Fairmont High School wrestlers were still alive in the 74th Annual State Wrestling Championships in Columbus.

Junior Tommy Kimbrell (160 pounds) won his quarterfinal match to advance to tonight’s semifinals. Sophomore Matt Denlinger (130 pounds) lost in the quarterfinals, but he won his wrestle-back to earn a spot in the semifinal round.

Sophomore Garrett Conner (189 pounds) was eliminated in the quarterfinal round.

A record of five Firebird wrestlers had qualified to compete at the State championships this year. In addition to Denlinger, Kimbrell and Conner, other qualifiers were junior Justin Kihn (112 pounds) and freshman Josh Parrett (119 pounds).
